Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Toyota GR-Series V6 (1GR-FE 4.0L / 2GR-FE 3.5L)

Also known as: 1GR-FE, 2GR-FE, Toyota 4.0 V6, Toyota 3.5 V6, GR family

Overview & history

Toyota introduced the GR engine family in 2002 as a clean-sheet replacement for its aging MZ and VZ V6s, and it became one of the most trusted V6 designs of the modern era. Every GR shares a 60-degree die-cast aluminum block with DOHC aluminum heads, and the family splits into two branches that matter here. The 4.0-liter 1GR-FE is the longitudinal truck engine: it debuted in the 2003 4Runner and Land Cruiser Prado, then spread to the Tacoma, Tundra and FJ Cruiser. The 3.5-liter 2GR-FE, introduced for 2005, is the transverse workhorse that powered the Camry, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, RAV4 and the Lexus ES 350 and RX 350. North American engines came from Toyota's Kamigo and Shimoyama plants in Japan and from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama near Huntsville. Output ranged from roughly 236-270 hp for the 1GR-FE and 266-315 hp for the 2GR-FE depending on year and application. Both branches earned a reputation for sailing past 300,000 km on basic maintenance, and the 1GR-FE was still being built for global Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux and Fortuner markets more than two decades after launch — a production run few modern engines can match.

Specs & engineering

  • •60-degree V6 with an open-deck, die-cast aluminum block and thin 'spiny' cast-iron cylinder liners cast into the block for weight savings and heat transfer
  • •Aluminum DOHC cylinder heads, four valves per cylinder (24 total), driven by maintenance-free timing chains — no belt service interval
  • •1GR-FE: 3,956 cc from a 94 mm bore and 95 mm stroke; 10.0:1 compression with single VVT-i, 10.4:1 after the Dual VVT-i update
  • •2GR-FE: 3,456 cc using the same 94 mm bore with a shorter 83 mm stroke; Dual VVT-i (intake and exhaust cam phasing) from launch
  • •Forged steel connecting rods and a lightweight rotating assembly across the family
  • •1GR-FE mounts longitudinally for RWD/4WD trucks; 2GR-FE mounts transversely for FWD/AWD cars and vans — same DNA, different packaging
  • •Sequential multiport fuel injection with iridium spark plugs on FE versions; the related 2GR-FSE added D-4S combined direct + port injection
  • •Toyota does not use Detroit-style catalogued casting numbers on these blocks — identify by the engine family code cast into the block and the stamped engine serial number

Generations & variants

  • •1GR-FE (2002-present): 4.0L truck engine; single VVT-i at launch (~236-245 hp), updated to Dual VVT-i around 2009-2010 (~270 hp in the 4Runner)
  • •2GR-FE (2005-2018 in North America): 3.5L port-injected Dual VVT-i; ~266-272 hp in Camry/Sienna/Highlander, up to ~315 hp in some Lexus tunes
  • •2GR-FSE (2005-2015): D-4S direct + port injection version for Lexus IS 350 / GS 350; 304-316 hp
  • •2GR-FZE: factory-supercharged variant (TRD Aurion in Australia; basis for the blown Lotus Evora S)
  • •2GR-FXE (2010+): Atkinson-cycle hybrid version for Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 450h
  • •2GR-FKS (2015+): second-generation 3.5 with D-4S; replaced both the 2GR-FE and the 1GR-FE in the Tacoma — outside this reman range but a direct descendant
  • •Related smaller GRs: 3GR/4GR 3.0L and 2.5L V6s for Japan and China-market sedans

Known issues & fixes

2GR-FE VVT-i oil supply line failure (2005-2009 builds)

What to watch for: Oil seepage near the front timing cover area, oil spots under the vehicle, or a sudden oil-pressure warning. The factory line used a short rubber section that can split without warning and dump oil in under a minute.

The fix: Toyota superseded the part with an all-metal oil line (fitted in production from late 2008-2010). Any engine going in should have the updated metal line installed — a cheap part that prevents a catastrophic failure.

1GR-FE head gasket seepage on early builds (2005-2006 era)

What to watch for: Slow coolant loss, a sweet smell, or misfire codes around the 200,000-240,000 km mark on first-year 4.0 Tacomas and 4Runners.

The fix: Toyota revised the gasket design in mid-2005. A proper rebuild uses resurfaced heads with the updated gasket, which puts the issue to bed permanently.

Water pump weep (both engines, especially pre-2010 2GR-FE)

What to watch for: Pink coolant streaks below the pump, seepage from the weep hole, or gradual coolant loss with no visible hose leak.

The fix: Replace the pump — Toyota updated the design around 2010. It is normal maintenance on high-mileage GRs, not a sign of a bad engine.

Drive belt idler pulley noise (2005-2008 2GR-FE)

What to watch for: Rattle or squeal from the belt area at idle on early Camry, RAV4, Highlander and Sienna 3.5s.

The fix: Install the updated heavy-duty idler pulley Toyota released around 2009. Quick, inexpensive, and done with the engine in the vehicle.

Secondary air injection faults (2010+ 1GR-FE trucks)

What to watch for: Codes P2440-P2445 with the truck stuck in limp mode on 4.0 Tacomas and 4Runners, usually from moisture in the air pump or stuck switching valves.

The fix: Updated pump and valve parts; Toyota extended warranty coverage on affected trucks to 10 years/240,000 km equivalent. An emissions-system fault, not an internal engine problem.

Did you know?

  • ★Lotus builds sports cars around this engine: the Evora, Exige V6 and current Emira all use the 2GR-FE, supercharged up to 430 hp in the Evora GT430 — the same basic V6 that powers a family Sienna.
  • ★The direct-injected sibling 2GR-FSE made Ward's 10 Best Engines list four years running (2006-2009) for its pioneering D-4S dual injection system.
  • ★Australia got a factory hot-rod sedan: the TRD Aurion used the supercharged 2GR-FZE, a Toyota-built blown version of the Camry's 3.5.
  • ★The 1GR-FE is one of the longest-lived modern engines — still in production for global Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux and Fortuner markets more than 20 years after its 2002 debut.
