Full chart — 10th VIN character → model year

The year code cycles every 30 years, so each character maps to two possible years. The 7th VIN character settles it: a number there means the 1980–2009 column, a letter means 2010–2039. The letters I, O, Q, U, Z and the digit 0 are never used in the year position.

One limit worth knowing: that tie-breaker is required for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles and trucks rated 10,000 lb GVWR or less (49 CFR 565). Heavier trucks and buses are outside the rule, so on those confirm the year from the door-jamb label or the build plate.
