Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Toyota 22R / 22R-E 2.4L (R Family)

Also known as: 22R, 22RE, 22R-E, 22R-TE, Toyota 2.4 truck engine, Laser Block (1985+)

Overview & history

Few engines carry a reputation like Toyota's 22R. Introduced for the 1981 model year as the successor to the 20R, the 22R was the final and most famous chapter of Toyota's R engine family, an inline-four line dating all the way back to 1953. Displacing 2,366 cc from a 92 mm bore and long 89 mm stroke, it paired a cast-iron block and forged-steel crankshaft with an aluminum SOHC eight-valve crossflow head - a simple, torque-rich recipe built for trucks. The carbureted 22R made about 97 hp; the fuel-injected 22R-E arrived in 1983 and settled in at 105-113 hp, with a rare turbocharged 22R-TE (135 hp) offered from 1986-1988. In 1985 Toyota substantially redesigned the engine - the so-called 'Laser Block' era - changing the head, pistons, deck height and timing set, which is why pre-1985 and 1985-up parts rarely interchange. The 22R family powered Toyota Pickups, 4Runners, Celicas and Coronas through 1995 in North America and soldiered on in export Hilux trucks until 1997. Conservative tuning and stout construction earned it a genuine 300,000-plus-kilometre reputation, and it remains one of the most trusted four-cylinders ever bolted into a truck.

Specs & engineering

  • •2,366 cc (2.4L) inline-four; 92.0 mm bore x 89.0 mm stroke - a long-stroke layout tuned for low and mid-range torque rather than revs
  • •Cast-iron block with a forged-steel crankshaft; aluminum SOHC 8-valve crossflow head with hemispherical-style combustion chambers
  • •Chain-driven camshaft: early engines used a dual-row timing chain, later engines a single-row chain with plastic guides - the family's one real weak point
  • •Solid-lifter valvetrain with screw-type adjusters; periodic valve lash adjustment keeps it quiet and healthy
  • •Carbureted 22R (Aisan two-barrel) made about 97 hp; the multi-port EFI 22R-E made 105-113 hp; the late carbureted 22R rose to 109 hp for 1990+
  • •22R-TE turbo (1986-1988) used a CT20 turbocharger at 7.5:1 compression for roughly 135 hp and 173 lb-ft
  • •Major 1985 redesign ('Laser Block'): revised deck height, head, dished pistons, timing components, water and oil pumps - pre-1985 and 1985+ parts largely do not interchange
  • •Quick head ID: 1981-84 heads have a square intake port and round exhaust port; 1985-95 heads have a square intake port and pear-shaped exhaust port with smaller 52-54 cc chambers
  • •Interference engine: a failed timing chain can contact valves, so chain and guide condition genuinely matter
  • •9.0:1 compression on naturally aspirated versions, happy on regular fuel

Generations & variants

  • •22R (1981-1995 North America, to 1997 in export markets) - carbureted 2.4L, 97 hp early, 109 hp from 1990
  • •22R-E (1983-1995) - multi-port electronic fuel injection, 105-113 hp depending on year; the definitive Toyota truck engine
  • •22R-TE (1986-1988) - factory CT20 turbo, about 135 hp; short production run and now collectible
  • •Pre-1985 vs 1985+ 'Laser Block' sub-generations - treat them as two different engines when ordering parts
  • •Predecessors and relatives: 20R 2.2L (1975-1980, shares deck height and head bolt pattern), 21R 2.0L (1978-1987, other markets); R family produced 1953-1997

Vehicles it powered

  • •Toyota Pickup / Hilux (1981-1995, export Hilux to 1997)
  • •Toyota 4Runner, 1st gen (1984-1989)
  • •Toyota 4Runner, 2nd gen (1990-1995)

Casting numbers

11101-35050Toyota head number for carbureted 22R applications (commonly seen on 1981-84 style heads)
11101-35060Toyota head number for 22R-E/22R-EC (RN5#/6#/70 chassis); later superseded by 11101-35080
11101-35080Toyota replacement head number covering 1985-1995 22R and 22R-E (square intake / pear exhaust port head)

Known issues & fixes

Timing chain guide failure (the famous one)

What to watch for: Rattle or 'marbles' sound at cold start from the front of the engine, chain slap that fades as oil pressure comes up, or unexplained coolant loss - a loose chain can saw through the timing cover into the water jacket and put coolant in the oil.

The fix: Replace the chain, plastic guides, tensioner and gears as a set before failure - typically needed around 130,000-250,000 km. Steel-backed guides are a popular permanent upgrade; quality oil and a filter with an anti-drainback valve extend guide life. Our remanufactured engines come with new timing components installed.

Emissions-era carburetor complexity (22R only)

What to watch for: Hard starting, hunting idle, hesitation and a maze of aged vacuum lines on 1981-1990 carbureted trucks.

The fix: A proper carb rebuild plus fresh vacuum lines fixes most of it; many owners simply prefer the fuel-injected 22R-E when replacing an engine.

Head gasket failure after overheating

What to watch for: Coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, or milky oil - note that milky oil can also be a chain guide/timing cover breach, so diagnose before condemning the head.

The fix: Resurface and pressure-check the aluminum head, install a quality gasket with the correct torque sequence, and fix the cooling-system cause (radiator, fan clutch, thermostat) first.

Noisy or tight valve lash

What to watch for: Steady ticking from the valve cover, or lost power and burnt valves if lash closes up - this is a solid-lifter engine with no hydraulic self-adjustment.

The fix: Adjust valve clearances at regular service intervals (a cheap, quick job on this head) rather than waiting for noise.

Did you know?

  • ★Marty McFly's black 1985 Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab in Back to the Future - arguably the most famous mini-truck in movie history - was a 22R-E truck, and it appeared in all three films.
  • ★Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart joined Toyota's factory off-road team in 1983 and piled up Baja 500 and Baja 1000 wins in Toyota pickups, cementing the truck line's desert-proof image during the 22R era.
  • ★Volkswagen sold a rebadged, 22R-powered Hilux as the Volkswagen Taro from 1989 to 1997 - a Toyota truck engine wearing a VW badge.
  • ★The R engine family ran from 1953 to 1997 - a 44-year production span - and the 22R was its final act.
