4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.
- “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
- Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
- The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
- Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
- Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
- A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.
Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Mazda B-Series Four (1.3 / 1.6 / 1.8)
Also known as: B-series, B3, B6, BP, BP-4W, B6ZE, 1.8 BP, Miata 1.6 / 1.8
Overview & history
The B-series is Mazda's small four-cylinder family, and it is one of the more widely travelled engines in this catalog — it powered Mazdas, Fords and Kias, and it is the engine that made the original Miata what it is. Introduced in the mid-1980s to replace the older E-series, it is a compact, belt-driven overhead-cam design offered in single-cam and twin-cam form across 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8-litre displacements. In Mazda's own cars it served the 323, Protege and MX-3. Ford, through its long-standing stake in Mazda, used the 1.8-litre BP in the Escort and Mercury Tracer built on Mazda architecture. Kia licensed the design and built its own versions for the Sephia and Spectra. But the engine's lasting fame comes from the MX-5 Miata: the 1.6-litre B6ZE launched the car in 1989, and the 1.8-litre BP took over in 1994, giving the car the eager, high-revving character that defined it. The family stayed in production into the mid-2000s before the MZR replaced it.
Specs & engineering
- •Cast-iron block with an aluminum cylinder head.
- •Belt-driven overhead camshafts; both SOHC and DOHC 16-valve versions were produced.
- •Three displacements in this catalog: 1.3L (B3), 1.6L (B6) and 1.8L (BP).
- •The Miata versions use a rear-mounted crank angle sensor arrangement and a distinctive short-runner intake.
- •Output ranged from roughly 82 hp on the 1.3 to 128-133 hp on the 1.8 BP in Miata tune.
- •Turbocharged and supercharged versions of the B6 were built for other markets, though not for the mainstream North American models here.
Generations & variants
- •B3 1.3L: base engine in the 323 and Festiva-class cars.
- •B6 1.6L: the 323, Protege and the 1989-1993 MX-5 Miata (B6ZE version, 116 hp).
- •BP 1.8L: the 1994-2000 Miata, the Protege, and the Mazda-built Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer.
- •Kia-built derivatives: the Sephia and Spectra used licensed versions of the same architecture.
Vehicles it powered
- •Mazda MX-5 Miata (1990-2000)
- •Mazda 323 / Protege (1986-2003)
- •Ford Escort (1991-2002)
- •Mercury Tracer (1991-1999)
- •Mazda MX-3 (1992-1995)
- •Kia Sephia / Spectra (1994-2004)
Known issues & fixes
Timing belt service
What to watch for: A B-series with no belt history — the camshafts are belt-driven on every version.
The fix: Replace the belt, tensioner and water pump together at the published interval.
Did you know?
- ★The 1.6-litre B6ZE in the first Miata is the reason a whole generation associates Mazda with a rev-happy small four.
- ★Ford, Mazda and Kia all built cars around this engine family, which is why the same basic design turns up under three different badges.
