Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Duratec V6 (2.5 / 3.0 DOHC)

Also known as: Duratec 25, Duratec 30, Mazda AJ, 2.5 DOHC V6, 3.0 DOHC V6, Ford 24-valve V6

Overview & history

The Duratec V6 was Ford's answer to a problem it had been living with for a decade: its mainstream 3.0-litre V6, the pushrod Vulcan, was durable but coarse and outclassed by the twin-cam sixes coming out of Japan. The Duratec, launched in 1994-95, was a clean-sheet all-aluminum design with double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree vee — compact enough to fit transversely in a mid-size front-drive car. It debuted as a 2.5-litre in the Contour, Mystique and Cougar, and a 3.0-litre version followed for the Taurus, Sable, Escape and Ranger. Mazda used the same engine, developed jointly and known internally as the AJ, in the MPV and Mazda6. It was a substantially more sophisticated engine than the Vulcan it ran alongside, revving higher and making more power, and it became the basis for later Ford V6 work. The practical trap in the parts world is that Ford sold two entirely different 3.0-litre V6s at the same time — this twin-cam Duratec and the pushrod Vulcan — and they share nothing.

Specs & engineering

  • •All-aluminum construction: aluminum block with iron liners and aluminum twin-cam heads.
  • •60-degree V6 with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder (24 valves).
  • •Chain-driven camshafts on most versions, with a compact front-drive package.
  • •Two displacements here: 2.5L (Contour/Mystique/Cougar) and 3.0L (Taurus, Escape, Mazda MPV, Mazda6).
  • •Output ranged from roughly 170 hp on the 2.5 to about 200-240 hp on later 3.0L versions.
  • •Completely unrelated to the 3.0L Vulcan pushrod V6 that Ford built simultaneously.

Generations & variants

  • •Duratec 25 (1995-2000): 2.5L in the Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique and Mercury Cougar.
  • •Duratec 30 (1996-2008): 3.0L in the Taurus, Sable, Escape, Mariner, Ranger and Five Hundred.
  • •Mazda AJ (2002-2008): the same 3.0L architecture in the Mazda MPV and Mazda6, developed jointly with Ford.
  • •Later versions gained variable valve timing and revised intake manifolds for broader torque.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford Contour / Mercury Mystique (1995-2000)
  • •Mercury Cougar (1999-2002)
  • •Ford Taurus / Mercury Sable (1996-2007)
  • •Ford Escape / Mercury Mariner (2001-2008)

  • •Ford Five Hundred / Freestyle (2005-2007)

Did you know?

  • ★Ford sold two completely unrelated 3.0-litre V6 engines side by side for years — the twin-cam Duratec and the pushrod Vulcan — which remains one of the most common sources of wrong-engine orders.
  • ★Mazda built its own version of this engine as the AJ, used in the MPV and Mazda6, under the Ford-Mazda alliance.
