4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.
- “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
- Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
- The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
- Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
- Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
- A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.
Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Mitsubishi 4G5 Astron 2.6L Four (G54B)
Also known as: Astron, G54B, 4G54, 2.6 Astron, Silent Shaft 2.6, Mazda B2600 2.6
Overview & history
The Astron is Mitsubishi's large four-cylinder, and the 2.6-litre G54B version is the one that spread furthest. It was a big, torquey, iron-block engine designed for trucks and heavier passenger cars, and it arrived in North America in the early 1980s under a remarkable number of badges. Chrysler sold it in the Dodge Ram 50 and Plymouth Arrow pickups, the Colt Vista, and the turbocharged Chrysler Conquest and Mitsubishi Starion. Mitsubishi used it in the first-generation Montero. And Mazda — a company with no corporate relationship to Mitsubishi — bought the engine for its B2600 pickup and first-generation MPV, which is why a 2.6-litre Mazda truck engine is actually a Mitsubishi. The Astron's most notable engineering feature is Mitsubishi's Silent Shaft system: a pair of counter-rotating balance shafts that cancel the secondary vibration inherent in a large four-cylinder. The idea was good enough that other manufacturers licensed it.
Specs & engineering
- •Cast-iron block with an aluminum cylinder head.
- •Single overhead camshaft, belt-driven, with two valves per cylinder on the mainstream versions.
- •Displacement is 2.6L (2,555 cc) — unusually large for a four-cylinder of the period.
- •Mitsubishi Silent Shaft: two counter-rotating balance shafts cancel the secondary shake that would otherwise make a four this large unpleasant.
- •Turbocharged versions powered the Mitsubishi Starion and Chrysler Conquest, making roughly 145-197 hp depending on year and intercooling.
- •Naturally aspirated output was typically around 100-110 hp with strong low-end torque.
Generations & variants
- •Naturally aspirated G54B (1981-1994): Dodge Ram 50, Plymouth Arrow pickup, Colt Vista, Mitsubishi Montero and Mighty Max.
- •Turbocharged (1983-1989): Mitsubishi Starion and Chrysler Conquest, including intercooled wide-body versions.
- •Mazda-badged applications (1987-1994): the Mazda B2600 pickup and first-generation MPV used the same Mitsubishi engine under licence.
Vehicles it powered
- •Dodge Ram 50 / Mitsubishi Mighty Max (1983-1993)
- •Mitsubishi Montero (1983-1991)
- •Chrysler Conquest / Mitsubishi Starion (1983-1989)
- •Mazda B2600 (1987-1993)
- •Mazda MPV (1989-1994)
- •Dodge Colt Vista (1984-1991)
Known issues & fixes
Balance shaft (Silent Shaft) belt and bearing wear
What to watch for: Noise from the front of the engine, or a balance shaft belt that has never been replaced — a failed balance belt can damage the main timing belt.
The fix: Service both belts together; on rebuild, inspect the balance shaft bearings and drive.
Timing belt service
What to watch for: A belt-driven overhead cam with no service record.
The fix: Replace the timing belt, balance shaft belt and tensioners as a set.
Did you know?
- ★The 2.6-litre engine in a Mazda B2600 or first-generation MPV is a Mitsubishi Astron — Mazda bought it in rather than developing its own big four.
- ★Mitsubishi's Silent Shaft balance-shaft patents were licensed by other manufacturers, making it one of the few pieces of Mitsubishi engineering to spread across the industry.
