Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Lima / Pinto OHC Four (2.0 / 2.3 / 2.5)

Also known as: Lima 2.3, Pinto engine, 2.3 OHC, 2.3 Turbo (SVO), 2.5 Ranger four, EAO

Overview & history

Ford's Lima four — named for the Lima, Ohio plant that built it, and often called the Pinto engine after the car it launched in — was North America's first mass-produced overhead-cam four-cylinder from a domestic manufacturer. It arrived for 1974 as a 2.3-litre, replacing the British-built Kent-derived engines in the Pinto and Mustang II, and it went on to have one of the longest careers of any Ford four. Through the 1980s it was the base engine in the Mustang, the Ranger and the Bronco II, and it developed a genuine performance reputation via the turbocharged versions: the Mustang SVO, the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and the Merkur XR4Ti all used boosted 2.3s making 175 to 205 horsepower. A 2.5-litre version arrived in 1998 for the Ranger, and the family finally ended in 2001. This matters when ordering parts, because Ford sold a completely different 2.3-litre four — the Duratec/MZR — starting in 2001, and the two share nothing but a displacement.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block with a cast-iron single-overhead-cam cylinder head, two valves per cylinder.
  • •Belt-driven overhead camshaft — one of the first domestic engines to use a rubber timing belt in volume.
  • •Displacements in this family: 2.0L, 2.3L (140 cu in) and 2.5L.
  • •Turbocharged versions used a Garrett turbo, with intercooling on the SVO and Turbo Coupe, reaching 175-205 hp.
  • •Naturally aspirated output ran roughly 86-110 hp depending on year, emissions equipment and application.
  • •A distinct auxiliary shaft in the block drives the oil pump and distributor on most versions.

Generations & variants

  • •Early carbureted (1974-1985): Pinto, Mustang II, Fox-body Mustang, Ranger and Bronco II.
  • •Turbocharged (1983-1988): Mustang SVO, Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, Merkur XR4Ti — intercooled and, on the SVO, electronically boosted.
  • •Fuel-injected 2.3 (1985-1997): the volume truck engine in the Ranger and Bronco II, with dual-plug heads from 1989 for emissions and smoothness.
  • •2.5L (1998-2001): the final and largest version, used in the Ranger before the Duratec 2.3 replaced it.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford Ranger (1983-2001)
  • •Ford Mustang (1974-1993)
  • •Ford Pinto / Mercury Bobcat (1974-1980)
  • •Ford Bronco II (1984-1990)
  • •Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (1983-1988)
  • •Ford Mustang SVO (1984-1986)
  • •Mercury Capri (1979-1986)

Known issues & fixes

Timing belt service

What to watch for: A belt-driven overhead cam with no service history. The belt also drives the auxiliary shaft on most versions.

The fix: Replace the belt and tensioner at the published interval; inspect the water pump and cam seal while the front cover is off.

Did you know?

  • ★The Lima 2.3 and the later Duratec 2.3 are both Ford 2.3-litre fours and share no parts whatsoever — year and model are the only reliable way to tell which one a vehicle has.
  • ★The Mustang SVO used a turbocharged, intercooled 2.3 to make more power than the contemporary 5.0 V8 in some model years.
  • ★The engine is named for Lima, Ohio, but is just as often called the Pinto engine after the car it debuted in.
