Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Power Stroke Diesel V8 (7.3 / 6.0 / 6.4)

Also known as: Power Stroke, 7.3 Power Stroke, 6.0 Power Stroke, 6.4 Power Stroke, Powerstroke diesel

Overview & history

Power Stroke is the name Ford has used for the diesel V8s in its heavy-duty trucks since 1994. The first, the 7.3-litre, was built by International Harvester's successor Navistar and is the one that built the badge's reputation — a direct-injection turbodiesel with hydraulically actuated electronic unit injectors, an iron block and heads, and a deserved reputation for taking abuse. It ran from 1994 to 2003 in the F-Series and E-Series. The 6.0-litre that replaced it in 2003 was a more modern engine on paper, with a variable-geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, but it arrived alongside tightening emissions rules and became the most troubled member of the family. The 6.4-litre that followed for 2008 added a twin sequential turbocharger arrangement and a diesel particulate filter to meet stricter standards. All three are heavy, purpose-built commercial diesels rather than passenger-car engines, and all three demand a much higher standard of cooling-system and fuel-system maintenance than a gasoline V8.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block and cast-iron cylinder heads on all three engines — these are commercial-duty castings.
  • •90-degree V8 diesel with direct injection and turbocharging on every version.
  • •7.3L: two valves per cylinder, hydraulically actuated electronically controlled unit injectors (HEUI), fixed-geometry turbocharger.
  • •6.0L: four valves per cylinder, HEUI injection, variable-geometry turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation.
  • •6.4L: four valves per cylinder, common-rail injection and twin sequential turbochargers, with a diesel particulate filter.
  • •Output rose across the family from roughly 210-275 hp on the 7.3 to about 350 hp on the 6.4.

Generations & variants

  • •7.3L Power Stroke (1994-2003): the original, in F-250 through F-550 Super Duty and E-Series vans.
  • •6.0L Power Stroke (2003-2007): four-valve heads and a variable-geometry turbo; used in Super Duty trucks, E-Series and the Excursion.
  • •6.4L Power Stroke (2008-2010): common rail and twin sequential turbochargers with emissions aftertreatment.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford F-250 / F-350 Super Duty (1994-2010)
  • •Ford F-450 / F-550 (1999-2010)
  • •Ford E-Series / Econoline (1994-2003)
  • •Ford Excursion (2000-2005)

Known issues & fixes

6.0L head gasket and head bolt failure

What to watch for: Coolant loss, white smoke, or coolant pushing back into the overflow bottle under load — the factory torque-to-yield head bolts are the widely documented weak point.

The fix: Rebuild with studs in place of the factory head bolts and address the EGR cooler and oil cooler at the same time; these failures are usually related.

6.0L EGR cooler and oil cooler restriction

What to watch for: Overheating under load, coolant in the intake, or a large temperature split between engine oil and coolant.

The fix: Replace the oil cooler and EGR cooler together and keep the cooling system properly maintained — a restricted oil cooler is often what kills the EGR cooler.

Injector and fuel-system contamination across the family

What to watch for: Hard starting, rough running and misfires, especially after fuel contamination or water in the fuel.

The fix: Service the fuel filters on schedule and address water separation; diesel injectors are expensive and intolerant of dirty fuel.

Did you know?

  • ★The 7.3-litre Power Stroke was built by Navistar, the successor to International Harvester, rather than by Ford itself.
  • ★The 6.4-litre used two turbochargers in sequence — a small one for low-speed response feeding a larger one for top-end flow.
