Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford 335-Series V8 (400 / 351M)

Also known as: 335 series, Ford 400, 351M, Cleveland-derived V8, 6.6L V8

Overview & history

The 335 series is the engine family that includes the famous 351 Cleveland and its less-celebrated relatives, the 351M and the 400. The Cleveland arrived in 1970 with big-port canted-valve heads and a reputation as one of Ford's best-breathing V8s. The 400, introduced for 1971, took the same basic architecture and raised the deck height to accommodate a longer stroke, producing a 6.6-litre engine aimed squarely at the heavy full-size cars and trucks of the era. The 351M — Modified — is essentially a 400 block with a shorter stroke, created so Ford could build both engines on the same tooling. Neither was a performance engine in the way the Cleveland was; by the time they appeared, compression ratios had fallen and emissions equipment had multiplied, and both were tuned for low-speed torque in heavy vehicles. They served the LTD, Thunderbird, Torino, Cougar and F-Series through the 1970s before Ford consolidated on the 302 and the 385-series big-blocks.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block and cast-iron heads, with a taller deck than the 351 Cleveland to allow a longer stroke.
  • •90-degree V8, pushrod OHV, two valves per cylinder, hydraulic lifters.
  • •Displacement here is 6.6L (400 cu in); the related 351M shares the same tall-deck block with a shorter stroke.
  • •Canted-valve cylinder head design inherited from the Cleveland family, though later versions used smaller, more emissions-friendly ports.
  • •Bellhousing pattern differs from the Windsor small-block, which is a common source of confusion in swaps.
  • •Typically fitted with a two- or four-barrel carburetor; output in the 1970s ran roughly 140-180 net horsepower.

Generations & variants

  • •400 (1971-1982): the tall-deck 6.6-litre, used in full-size Fords, Mercurys, Torinos and F-Series trucks.
  • •351M (1975-1982): a shorter-stroke version of the same tall-deck block, built alongside the 400.
  • •Both share the 335-series architecture with the 351 Cleveland but use a different deck height and are not directly interchangeable with it.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford LTD (1971-1979)
  • •Ford Thunderbird (1972-1979)
  • •Ford Torino / Gran Torino (1972-1976)
  • •Ford F-Series (1977-1982)
  • •Mercury Cougar / Marquis (1972-1979)
  • •Ford Bronco (1978-1982)

Did you know?

  • ★The 400 and 351M share a block; Ford built both from the same tooling by simply changing the crankshaft stroke.
  • ★Despite sharing the 351 name, the 351M and the 351 Windsor are different engines from different families and do not interchange.
