Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Essex V6 (3.8 / 3.9 / 4.2) — Canadian

Also known as: Essex V6, 3.8 V6, 4.2 V6, Windsor-built V6, 3.8 Supercharged (Thunderbird SC)

Overview & history

The Essex V6 takes its name from the Ford engine plant in Windsor, Ontario, where it was built for its entire twenty-six-year production run. It arrived for 1982 as a 3.8-litre 90-degree pushrod V6 — a deliberately conventional, low-cost design meant to replace inline sixes and small V8s across Ford's North American range as the company downsized after the fuel crises. Over the years it turned up almost everywhere: the Thunderbird and Cougar, the Taurus and Sable, the Mustang, the Windstar minivan, and eventually the F-150, where a 4.2-litre version served as the base engine from 1997 to 2008. Ford also built a supercharged 3.8 for the 1989-1995 Thunderbird Super Coupe, which made 210 and later 230 horsepower and remains the most interesting thing the engine ever did. A 3.9-litre version appeared late in life for the Freestar and Monterey minivans. The Essex was never a sophisticated engine — two valves per cylinder, pushrods, iron block — but it was cheap, compact and produced in enormous numbers.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block with cast-iron heads on early engines; later versions used aluminum heads.
  • •90-degree V6 layout with a split-pin crankshaft to achieve even firing intervals.
  • •Pushrod OHV, two valves per cylinder, hydraulic lifters throughout.
  • •Three displacements in this catalog: 3.8L (232 cu in), 3.9L and 4.2L (256 cu in) — the 4.2 is the truck version with a longer stroke.
  • •A roots-type supercharger was fitted to the 3.8 in the 1989-1995 Thunderbird Super Coupe, raising output to 210-230 hp.
  • •Naturally aspirated output typically ran from about 140 hp to 200 hp depending on year and application.

Generations & variants

  • •3.8L car engine (1982-2004): Thunderbird, Cougar, Taurus, Sable, Mustang and Windstar.
  • •3.8L Supercharged (1989-1995): Thunderbird Super Coupe and Cougar XR-7, with an Eaton supercharger and intercooler.
  • •4.2L truck engine (1997-2008): the base V6 in the F-150 and E-Series, with a longer stroke and truck-specific accessories.
  • •3.9L (2004-2007): a late variant used in the Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans.

Known issues & fixes

Head gasket failure on 1980s-1990s 3.8L engines

What to watch for: Coolant loss with no external leak, overheating, or combustion gases in the cooling system. This is the single most-documented weakness of the Essex and prompted extended factory coverage on affected model years.

The fix: Rebuild with the revised gasket design and confirm the heads and deck are within flatness spec; a reman engine should already be assembled with the updated parts.

Lower intake manifold gasket and coolant crossover leaks

What to watch for: Coolant seeping at the front of the intake, or coolant in the oil on higher-mileage engines.

The fix: Replace the intake gaskets with the current design; this is a common service item rather than a reason to condemn an engine.

Did you know?

  • ★The Essex is named for Essex County, Ontario, where the Windsor engine plant that built it is located — it is a Canadian-built engine from first to last.
  • ★The supercharged 3.8 in the Thunderbird Super Coupe made the same 210 hp as the V8 Thunderbird of the era, but with far more torque low down.
