Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Cyclone V6 (3.5 / 3.7 DOHC)

Also known as: Cyclone, 3.5 Duratec, 3.7 Duratec, 3.5 Ti-VCT, 3.7 Ti-VCT, MZI (Mazda)

Overview & history

The Cyclone family replaced the aging Duratec 30 as Ford's mainstream V6 and became the backbone of the company's engine range through the late 2000s and 2010s. Introduced for 2007, it is an all-aluminum, twin-cam, 24-valve design with variable valve timing on both camshafts, designed from the start to be scaled in displacement and adapted to both transverse and longitudinal installations. That flexibility is why it ended up in such a broad range of vehicles: the Edge, Taurus, Flex, Explorer and Lincoln MKS and MKX in 3.5-litre form, the F-150 and Mustang in 3.7-litre form, and the Mazda CX-9 as the MZI. Its most significant legacy is that Ford chose it as the base architecture for the first EcoBoost engines — the twin-turbocharged, direct-injected 3.5 EcoBoost that transformed the F-150 lineup is a heavily reworked Cyclone. Naturally aspirated versions made roughly 265 to 305 horsepower depending on displacement and tune.

Specs & engineering

  • •All-aluminum: aluminum block with iron liners and aluminum twin-cam heads.
  • •60-degree V6, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder.
  • •Chain-driven cams with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) on most versions.
  • •Two displacements here: 3.5L (3,496 cc) and 3.7L (3,726 cc), the 3.7 achieved with a larger bore.
  • •The water pump is driven internally by the timing chain and sits inside the front cover on naturally aspirated versions.
  • •Naturally aspirated output ran from about 265 hp to 305 hp; the turbocharged EcoBoost derivative exceeded 365 hp.

Generations & variants

  • •3.5L naturally aspirated (2007-2015): Edge, Taurus, Flex, Explorer, Lincoln MKS/MKX/MKT and Mazda CX-9.
  • •3.7L naturally aspirated (2011-2015): F-150 base V6, Mustang V6 and Lincoln MKZ/MKX.
  • •3.5L EcoBoost (2010 onward): twin-turbocharged, direct-injected development of the same architecture — a distinct engine build.
  • •Mazda MZI (2007-2015): Mazda's designation for the 3.5 and 3.7 used in the CX-9.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford Edge (2007-2015)
  • •Ford Taurus (2008-2015)
  • •Ford Flex (2009-2015)
  • •Ford Explorer (2011-2015)
  • •Ford F-150 (2011-2015)
  • •Ford Mustang (2011-2015)
  • •Lincoln MKS / MKX / MKT (2007-2015)
  • •Mazda CX-9 (2007-2015)

Known issues & fixes

Internal water pump failure

What to watch for: Coolant loss with no external leak, or coolant appearing in the oil. The pump is chain-driven inside the front cover, so a failed seal drains into the crankcase rather than onto the driveway.

The fix: Replace the water pump during timing chain service and check bearing condition if coolant has already reached the oil — a contaminated engine may not be worth rebuilding.

Timing chain and guide wear on high-mileage engines

What to watch for: A rattle on cold start-up, or cam-correlation fault codes.

The fix: Replace chains, guides and tensioners as a set; a properly remanufactured engine should include the full timing kit.

Did you know?

  • ★The 3.5 EcoBoost that made Ford's turbocharged F-150 possible is a development of this same Cyclone architecture.
  • ★Mazda used the Cyclone as the MZI in the CX-9 — one of the last engines shared under the Ford-Mazda relationship.
