4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.
- “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
- Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
- The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
- Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
- Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
- A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.
Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford Duratec / Mazda MZR Four (2.0 / 2.3 / 2.5)
Also known as: Duratec 20, Duratec 23, Duratec 25, Mazda MZR, MZR 2.3, L3, LF, L5
Overview & history
This four-cylinder family is the product of Ford's long working relationship with Mazda, and it goes by different names depending on which badge is on the car: Ford calls it Duratec, Mazda calls it MZR, and the engineering is essentially common. It replaced two very different engines at once — Ford's ancient iron-block Lima 2.3 in the Ranger, and Mazda's F-series four in the 626 lineage — with a modern all-aluminum, twin-cam, chain-driven design. First appearing around 2001, it became one of the most widely used four-cylinders of the 2000s in North America, powering the Focus, Escape, Fusion, Ranger, Mazda3, Mazda6, Tribute and Milan. A turbocharged development of the 2.3 became the DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6 and Ford Focus ST, and Ford's early EcoBoost work drew on the same architecture. The most important practical point for anyone shopping parts is that a 2001-and-later Ford 2.3 is this engine, not the old Lima — they are unrelated.
Specs & engineering
- •All-aluminum: aluminum block with cast-in iron liners and an aluminum twin-cam 16-valve head.
- •Chain-driven double overhead camshafts — no timing belt on this family.
- •Three displacements here: 2.0L, 2.3L (2,261 cc) and 2.5L.
- •Balance shafts are fitted to the 2.3 and 2.5 to control secondary vibration.
- •Variable valve timing was used on most versions, on the intake cam and later on both cams.
- •Naturally aspirated output ranged from roughly 143 hp (2.0) to 175 hp (2.5); the direct-injection turbo versions made 244-263 hp.
Generations & variants
- •Duratec 23 / MZR 2.3 (2001-2012): Ranger, Focus, Escape, Tribute, Mazda3 and Mazda6.
- •Duratec 20 / MZR 2.0 (2003-2011): the smaller version in the Focus and Mazda3.
- •Duratec 25 / MZR 2.5 (2008-2013): the largest naturally aspirated version, in the Fusion, Escape, Milan and Mazda6.
- •MZR DISI Turbo (2006-2013): direct-injection turbocharged 2.3, used in Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6 and CX-7 — a distinct build from the naturally aspirated engines.

Did you know?
- ★Ford and Mazda sold the same basic engine under two different names — Duratec and MZR — with the two companies sharing development through their long alliance.
- ★The turbocharged direct-injection version of this engine gave Mazda the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6, and fed directly into Ford's first EcoBoost engines.
