Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Ford SPI 2.0L Four (Split Port Induction)

Also known as: SPI, Split Port Induction, 2.0 SOHC, 2.0 Escort four, CVH-derived 2.0

Overview & history

The SPI — Split Port Induction — was Ford's low-cost 2.0-litre four for its smallest North American cars in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is not a clean-sheet design: it descends from the CVH engine family Ford had been building since 1981, reworked with a new cylinder head featuring a split intake port arrangement that gave each cylinder a primary and secondary runner. At low engine speed only the primary port flows, keeping intake velocity and low-end torque up; at higher speed a valve opens the secondary port for breathing. The result was a simple two-valve single-cam engine that behaved better across the rev range than its specification suggested, and cost very little to build. It powered the Escort and Mercury Tracer from 1997, and served as the base engine in the first-generation North American Focus alongside the more sophisticated Zetec. The two 2.0-litre Focus engines are entirely different: the SPI is a single-cam 8-valve, the Zetec a twin-cam 16-valve.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block with an aluminum single-overhead-cam cylinder head, two valves per cylinder.
  • •Split-port intake design: each cylinder has primary and secondary intake runners, with the secondary opened by a control valve at higher engine speeds.
  • •Belt-driven single overhead camshaft.
  • •Displacement is 1,988 cc (2.0L).
  • •Output was roughly 110 hp — modest, but with usable low-speed torque thanks to the split-port design.
  • •Derived from the earlier CVH engine family rather than sharing anything with the Zetec.

Generations & variants

  • •Escort / Tracer (1997-2003): the introduction of the split-port head on the 2.0.
  • •Focus (2000-2004): the SPI served as the base engine below the twin-cam Zetec.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Ford Escort (1997-2003)
  • •Mercury Tracer (1997-1999)
  • •Ford Focus (2000-2004)

Did you know?

  • ★The base Focus 2.0 and the Zetec Focus 2.0 are completely different engines — one is an 8-valve single-cam, the other a 16-valve twin-cam.
  • ★Split-port induction was a low-cost way to get the low-speed torque of a small port and the high-speed breathing of a large one without variable valve timing.
