Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Chrysler LA / Magnum V8 & 3.9L V6 (318 / 360)

Also known as: LA V8, 318, 360, 5.2 Magnum, 5.9 Magnum, 3.9 Magnum V6, Chrysler small-block

Overview & history

The LA is Chrysler's small-block V8, and it stayed in production for nearly forty years. It arrived for 1964 as a lighter, thin-wall replacement for the old A-series "poly" V8, keeping the same 4.46-inch bore spacing but swapping the polyspherical heads for conventional wedge chambers. The 273 came first, followed by the 318 in 1967 and the 340 and 360 at the end of the decade. The 318 in particular became one of the most-produced V8s in North America, turning up in everything from Dart coupes to police Diplomats to motorhome chassis. In 1987 Chrysler lopped two cylinders off the 318 to create a 3.9-litre V6 for the new Dakota, giving the family an even-fire-adjacent 90-degree six that shared most of its parts bin with the V8s. The last big change came in 1992, when the engines were reworked as the Magnum series: new cylinder heads with a centre-bolt valve cover pattern, a revised valvetrain and sequential multi-port fuel injection in place of the old throttle-body setup. Magnum 5.2 and 5.9 V8s carried Ram pickups, Dakotas, Durangos and the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited through the 1990s, and the family finally bowed out in 2003 when the Gen III HEMI took over.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block and cast-iron heads throughout; 4.46-inch bore spacing shared with the earlier A-series V8.
  • •90-degree V8 with a two-plane crank; the 3.9L V6 is the same architecture with two cylinders removed, so it is an odd-fire design in its earliest form.
  • •Pushrod OHV, two valves per cylinder, hydraulic lifters — the family never received overhead cams.
  • •One family, three displacements in this catalog: 3.9L V6 (239 cu in), 5.2L V8 (318 cu in) and 5.9L V8 (360 cu in).
  • •318 and 360 share a 3.31-inch stroke lineage but differ in bore and deck height — the 360 uses a taller deck and an externally balanced crank.
  • •Magnum (1992-2003) versions use centre-bolt valve covers, revised heads and sequential multi-port injection; pre-Magnum engines used carburetors or throttle-body injection.
  • •Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 on the V8s.

Generations & variants

  • •LA carbureted era (1964-1988): 273, 318, 340 and 360 with 2- and 4-barrel carburetors; the 318 became the volume engine across Mopar cars, trucks and vans.
  • •Throttle-body injection (1988-1991): electronic fuel injection arrives on the 318 and 360 in trucks and full-size vans.
  • •Magnum (1992-2003): new heads, revised valvetrain and sequential MPI. 5.2L Magnum made roughly 220-230 hp and the 5.9L Magnum around 245-250 hp in truck tune.
  • •3.9L V6 (1987-2003): the 318-derived six built for the Dakota, later used in Ram 1500s and Ram vans; it received the same Magnum updates in 1992.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Dodge Ram / Ram Pickup (1994-2003)
  • •Dodge Dakota (1987-2003)
  • •Dodge Durango (1998-2003)
  • •Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited (1998)
  • •Dodge Ram Van / Ram Wagon (1994-2003)
  • •Dodge D/W Series Pickup (1972-1993)
  • •Dodge Diplomat / Plymouth Gran Fury (1977-1989)
  • •Chrysler Fifth Avenue (1982-1989)
  • •Dodge Ramcharger (1974-1993)

Known issues & fixes

Intake manifold plenum pan gasket leak (5.2L and 5.9L Magnum)

What to watch for: Heavy oil consumption with no external leak, oil-fouled plugs and blue smoke — the plenum pan under the intake manifold lets crankcase oil get drawn into the intake.

The fix: Replace the plenum pan gasket with the updated steel-reinforced kit when the intake is off; a properly rebuilt engine should already have it.

Camshaft and lifter wear on high-mileage Magnums

What to watch for: A ticking or clattering top end and low power, often after extended oil-change intervals.

The fix: Replace the cam and lifters as a set and stay on a conventional oil-change schedule — flat-tappet cams do not tolerate neglected oil.

Cracked exhaust manifolds

What to watch for: A tick on cold start that quiets as the engine warms, plus an exhaust smell in the engine bay.

The fix: Replace the manifold and use new bolts and gaskets; this is a bolt-on repair and does not require engine replacement.

Did you know?

  • ★The 3.9L V6 is literally a 318 V8 with two cylinders removed — a cost-saving move that let Chrysler build both engines on the same line for the 1987 Dakota.
  • ★The 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited was, at the time, the quickest sport-utility Chrysler had ever sold.
  • ★The 318 outlived nearly all of its 1960s rivals, staying in production in one form or another for close to four decades.
