Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Chrysler Pentastar 3.6L V6

Also known as: Pentastar, 3.6 Pentastar, 3.6 VVT V6, ERB

Overview & history

The Pentastar arrived for the 2011 model year and did something unusual: it replaced almost every V6 Chrysler was building at the time, all at once. Where the company had previously juggled the 3.3 and 3.8 minivan pushrod sixes, the 3.5 SOHC, the 2.7 DOHC and Jeep's 3.7, the Pentastar consolidated all of it into a single all-aluminum, twin-cam, 24-valve V6 with variable valve timing. It was lighter than the engines it replaced, made substantially more power — around 283-305 horsepower depending on application — and was designed from the outset to be flexible enough for everything from front-drive minivans to the Wrangler. It went into the 300, Charger, Challenger, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Town & Country and Ram 1500, and it has remained Chrysler's core V6 ever since, receiving a significant update in 2016 that added cooled exhaust gas recirculation and further efficiency work.

Specs & engineering

  • •All-aluminum: aluminum block with cast-in iron liners and aluminum twin-cam heads.
  • •60-degree V6, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder (24 valves total).
  • •Chain-driven cams with dual independent variable valve timing.
  • •Displacement is 3,604 cc (220 cu in).
  • •Output at launch ranged from roughly 283 hp to 305 hp depending on the vehicle and exhaust configuration.
  • •Designed for both transverse (front-drive minivan) and longitudinal (rear-drive car, Wrangler, Ram) installations from a single core architecture.

Generations & variants

  • •First-generation Pentastar (2011-2015): the launch engine across Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram.
  • •Upgraded Pentastar (2016 onward): revised heads, cooled EGR on many applications, and higher compression for improved efficiency.
  • •A stop/start-equipped version and an eTorque mild-hybrid version were later offered in Ram and Wrangler applications.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Chrysler 300 (2011-2015)
  • •Dodge Charger (2011-2015)
  • •Dodge Challenger (2011-2015)
  • •Jeep Grand Cherokee (2011-2015)
  • •Jeep Wrangler JK (2012-2015)
  • •Chrysler Town & Country / Dodge Grand Caravan (2011-2015)
  • •Ram 1500 (2013-2015)
  • •Dodge Durango (2011-2015)

Known issues & fixes

Left-bank (cylinder head) failure on early 2011-2013 engines

What to watch for: A misfire on cylinder 2, 4 or 6 accompanied by a ticking noise — early left-side heads were subject to valve seat problems. Chrysler extended warranty coverage on affected engines.

The fix: Replace with a later-revision head; a properly remanufactured Pentastar should be built with the updated casting rather than the original design.

Rocker arm and lash adjuster wear

What to watch for: A persistent tick at idle and a misfire code, often after neglected oil changes.

The fix: Replace the affected rocker arms and lash adjusters and keep to the specified oil grade and interval.

Did you know?

  • ★The Pentastar replaced seven different Chrysler V6 engines in a single model-year changeover — an unusually aggressive consolidation.
  • ★It is named after the Pentastar, the five-pointed corporate logo Chrysler used from 1962 into the 1990s.
