Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Chrysler 2.4L DOHC Four (EDZ)

Also known as: EDZ, 2.4 DOHC, 2.4 World-era four, EDV (turbo), EDT (turbo)

Overview & history

Chrysler's 2.4-litre twin-cam four grew directly out of the 2.0-litre engine developed for the Neon, sharing its basic bottom-end concept but adding displacement and a pair of balance shafts to make it suitable for heavier cars and minivans. It entered service in the mid-1990s and became one of Chrysler's most widely deployed four-cylinders, showing up under the hoods of the Stratus and Sebring, the Caravan and Voyager minivans, the PT Cruiser, and eventually Jeep's Wrangler, Liberty and Compass. It also became the basis for Chrysler's small-displacement performance engines: turbocharged versions produced the PT Cruiser GT and, most memorably, the Dodge SRT-4, where a heavily boosted 2.4 made 215 and later 230 horsepower and embarrassed a lot of more expensive machinery. The engine was gradually displaced by the GEMA-built World Engine in the late 2000s, though it soldiered on in Jeep applications for several years after that.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block with an aluminum twin-cam 16-valve cylinder head.
  • •Belt-driven double overhead camshafts; this is an interference design, so a failed belt will contact valves.
  • •Two chain-driven balance shafts in the block counter the secondary shake of a large-displacement four.
  • •Bore and stroke give 2,429 cc (148 cu in); the engine shares its bore spacing and general layout with the 2.0L Neon four.
  • •Naturally aspirated output ran roughly 148-172 hp depending on application and model year.
  • •Turbocharged variants were built for the PT Cruiser GT and Dodge SRT-4, reaching 215-230 hp in factory form.

Generations & variants

  • •Naturally aspirated EDZ (1995-2009): the volume engine, in Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring, Breeze, Caravan, Voyager and PT Cruiser.
  • •Turbocharged EDV / EDT (2003-2009): PT Cruiser GT and Dodge Neon SRT-4, with forged internals and revised cooling in the highest-output builds.
  • •Jeep applications (2002-2012): Liberty, Wrangler TJ, Compass and Patriot used the 2.4 as the base four-cylinder.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Chrysler Sebring (1996-2010)
  • •Dodge Stratus / Chrysler Cirrus (1995-2006)
  • •Chrysler PT Cruiser (2001-2010)
  • •Dodge Caravan / Chrysler Voyager (1996-2007)
  • •Jeep Liberty (2002-2005)
  • •Jeep Wrangler TJ (2003-2006)
  • •Dodge Neon SRT-4 (2003-2005)
  • •Jeep Compass / Patriot (2007-2009)

Known issues & fixes

Timing belt failure on an interference engine

What to watch for: No documented belt service. When the belt breaks, pistons meet valves — the engine does not simply coast to a stop.

The fix: Replace the belt, tensioner and idlers at the specified interval; do the water pump at the same time since it is behind the same cover.

Balance shaft chain and tensioner wear

What to watch for: A rattle from the lower front of the engine, most noticeable at idle or just off idle.

The fix: Service the balance shaft drive during a rebuild; a remanufactured engine should have this assembly renewed.

Head gasket failure on overheated examples

What to watch for: Coolant loss, white exhaust smoke or combustion gases in the coolant, usually following a cooling-system neglect event.

The fix: Address the root cause — radiator, thermostat or fan — before fitting a replacement engine, or the new one will follow the old one.

Did you know?

  • ★The Dodge SRT-4 used a turbocharged version of this engine to make 230 hp from 2.4 litres, making it one of the quickest cars Dodge sold at the time for the money.
  • ★The 2.4 and the Neon 2.0 are close relatives — the 2.4 is essentially the larger-displacement, balance-shafted development of the same basic design.
