Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

Chrysler K 2.2L / 2.5L Four-Cylinder

Also known as: K engine, Trenton 2.2, 2.2 Turbo, Turbo I, Turbo II, 2.5 balance-shaft four

Overview & history

When Chrysler was fighting for its life at the start of the 1980s, the K engine was the four-cylinder it bet the company on. Introduced for 1981 alongside the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant — the original K-cars — the 2.2-litre was Chrysler's first modern in-house four, replacing a patchwork of bought-in Volkswagen and Mitsubishi engines. It was a simple, sturdy iron-block single-overhead-cam design with a belt-driven camshaft, and it was cheap to build and easy to service. It also turned out to respond extremely well to boost: the turbocharged 2.2 arrived in 1984 and evolved through Turbo I, Turbo II and the intercooled variants that made the Daytona, Shelby Charger, GLH-S and Spirit R/T genuinely quick cars. A 2.5-litre version came in 1986, stroking the 2.2 and adding a pair of gear-driven balance shafts to smooth out the bigger displacement. Between them the two engines powered nearly every front-drive Chrysler product of the decade — sedans, coupes, convertibles and the first generations of the minivan — before finally being retired in the mid-1990s.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block with an aluminum single-overhead-cam cylinder head, two valves per cylinder.
  • •Belt-driven overhead camshaft — the timing belt is a scheduled maintenance item on every version.
  • •2.2L displaces 135 cu in; the 2.5L is the same engine with a longer stroke, at 153 cu in.
  • •The 2.5L adds two gear-driven balance shafts in the block to cancel the secondary vibration of the larger bore-stroke combination — the 2.2 has none.
  • •Fueling progressed from a two-barrel carburetor (1981) to throttle-body injection, then multi-point injection on the turbo engines.
  • •Turbocharged versions ran from roughly 142 hp (Turbo I) to 224 hp in the intercooled Turbo III-era performance builds.

Generations & variants

  • •Naturally aspirated 2.2 (1981-1990): carbureted, then fuel-injected; the volume engine of the K-car era.
  • •Turbo 2.2 (1984-1989): Turbo I and the intercooled Turbo II, fitted to Daytona, Shelby Charger, Lancer, LeBaron GTS and the Shelby specials.
  • •2.5L (1986-1995): the stroked, balance-shafted version used widely in minivans, Spirit, Acclaim, Shadow and Sundance; also offered with a turbo.
  • •Late 2.5L engines carried the family into the mid-1990s in the Caravan and Voyager before the 2.4L DOHC replaced it.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Dodge Aries / Plymouth Reliant (1981-1989)
  • •Dodge Caravan / Plymouth Voyager (1984-1995)
  • •Dodge Daytona (1984-1993)
  • •Dodge Shadow / Plymouth Sundance (1987-1994)
  • •Dodge Spirit / Plymouth Acclaim (1989-1995)
  • •Chrysler LeBaron (1982-1995)
  • •Dodge Omni / Plymouth Horizon (1983-1990)
  • •Dodge Lancer (1985-1989)

Known issues & fixes

Timing belt service interval

What to watch for: Any K engine with no record of a belt change — the belt drives the overhead cam and is not a lifetime part.

The fix: Replace the timing belt and tensioner on schedule; also inspect the water pump while the front of the engine is apart.

Balance shaft wear on the 2.5L

What to watch for: Noise from the lower block on a 2.5, or debris in the oil pan; the balance shafts run in the block and are oil-fed.

The fix: Address on rebuild — a properly remanufactured 2.5 will have the balance shaft bearings and drive inspected and restored.

Did you know?

  • ★The 2.2 was the first four-cylinder Chrysler designed and built in-house for its front-drive cars, replacing engines bought from Volkswagen and Mitsubishi.
  • ★Carroll Shelby put his name on turbocharged 2.2 variants — the GLH and GLH-S were among the quickest cheap cars of the 1980s.
  • ★The 2.5 is the 2.2 with a longer stroke plus balance shafts; almost everything else in the two engines is shared.
