Platinum Warranty: parts and labour, four years, included on gas engines in non-commercial use

4-year no-fault nationwide warranty — includedOn gas engines in non-commercial use, at no extra charge. The builder’s standard cover is 3 years, parts only. Every gas engine we sell includes the 4-year no-fault warranty with labour, at no extra charge.

  • “No fault” means we do not investigate why it failed — if a covered engine fails inside the term, it is covered.
  • Labour is paid up to CAD $95.00 per hour — a cap on the rate, not a flat payout — and only for the remove-and-replace hours in the Mitchell labour guide. Diagnostic time is covered up to 2 hours, and fluids up to CAD $200.00. Towing and a rental car are not covered. Anything not listed here needs to be agreed with us before the work starts.
  • The 4 years start the day the engine is installed, and a claim needs proof that a professional shop installed it.
  • Unlimited kilometres, and no deductible.
  • Call us before any warranty work starts, so we can authorise it. Labour paid on a repair we were not asked about first is not covered.
  • A claim starts with a call to us. We file it with the manufacturer, and the manufacturer pays it.

Diesel engines, and engines put into commercial service, are not covered by this 4-year warranty — the terms vary by engine, so call us for the terms on the unit you’re pricing.

AMC V8 (304 / 360)

Also known as: AMC 304, AMC 360, AMC gen-3 V8, Jeep 5.9 V8, AMC small-block

Overview & history

American Motors built its own V8s, and the third-generation family introduced for 1966 is the one that survived longest. Starting as the 290, it grew into the 304, 343, 360, 390 and finally the 401, all sharing a common architecture with thin-wall iron castings and a compact external package. The 304 (5.0L) and 360 (5.9L) are the two that carried on the longest, powering AMC's own cars — Javelin, AMX, Matador, Ambassador — and then, crucially, Jeep. After AMC acquired Jeep in 1970, the 304 became the V8 option in the CJ-5 and CJ-7, and the 360 did heavy-duty work in the Wagoneer, Cherokee, and J-series pickups. When Chrysler bought AMC in 1987, the 360 stayed in production for the Grand Wagoneer until that vehicle was discontinued in 1991. It is worth being precise about one thing: the AMC 360 and the Chrysler 360 are both 5.9-litre, 360-cubic-inch V8s, and they are completely unrelated engines that share no parts.

Specs & engineering

  • •Cast-iron block and cast-iron heads, thin-wall cast for relatively low weight.
  • •90-degree V8, pushrod OHV, two valves per cylinder with hydraulic lifters.
  • •304 displaces 5.0L (304 cu in); 360 displaces 5.9L (360 cu in) — both share the same basic block family.
  • •All engines in the family use the same bore spacing, allowing 304, 360, 390 and 401 to share many components.
  • •Fed by two- and four-barrel carburetors throughout its production life; AMC never fuel-injected this V8.
  • •Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Generations & variants

  • •AMC passenger cars (1970-1979): 304 and 360 in Javelin, AMX, Matador, Hornet and Ambassador.
  • •Jeep CJ (1972-1981): the 304 was the V8 option in the CJ-5 and CJ-7.
  • •Full-size Jeep (1971-1991): the 360 powered the Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Cherokee SJ and J-series pickups, continuing under Chrysler ownership until 1991.

Vehicles it powered

  • •Jeep CJ-5 / CJ-7 (1972-1981)
  • •Jeep Grand Wagoneer (1971-1991)
  • •Jeep Cherokee SJ (1974-1983)
  • •Jeep J-Series Pickup (1971-1988)
  • •AMC Javelin / AMX (1970-1974)
  • •AMC Matador (1971-1978)
  • •AMC Hornet / Concord (1970-1979)

Did you know?

  • ★The AMC 360 and the Chrysler 360 are both 5.9-litre V8s of 360 cubic inches and share absolutely nothing — a genuine trap when ordering parts for a Jeep.
  • ★The AMC V8 outlived its parent company: Chrysler kept building the 360 for the Grand Wagoneer for four years after buying AMC in 1987.
  • ★The same basic architecture stretched from 290 to 401 cubic inches without a change in bore spacing.
