How to Find the Right Used Part for Your Vehicle
5 min read
Finding the right used part doesn't have to be a guessing game. Whether you're fixing winter pothole damage, replacing a tired engine, or tracking down a hard-to-find trim piece, the trick is matching the part to your exact vehicle the first time — so it bolts on and works. At Eskimo Auto & Truck Parts, we've been helping Edmonton and Alberta drivers do exactly that since 1984. Here's how to give us what we need so we can find your part fast, and get it to you tested, warrantied, and ready to install.
The fastest way: start with your VIN
Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the single most useful thing you can give us. It's a 17-character code unique to your vehicle, and it tells us far more than year, make, and model alone — it decodes the exact engine, drivetrain, trim level, and factory options your vehicle left the plant with. That matters, because two trucks that look identical in the driveway can take completely different parts under the skin.
You'll find your VIN in a few easy spots: stamped on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside), on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, and on your registration and insurance papers. Snap a clear photo of it and you're most of the way to a quote.
No VIN handy? Year, make, model — and the details that matter
You don't need a VIN to get started. If you can give us the year, make, and model, we can begin the search right away. To narrow it down accurately, a few extra details go a long way:
- Engine size and type (for example, 3.5L V6 vs. 5.0L V8) — critical for engines, transmissions, and many under-hood parts
- Drivetrain — 2WD, 4WD, AWD, and automatic vs. manual transmission
- Trim or package (SLT, Limited, Sport, etc.), which changes wheels, interior, and electronics
- For body panels and bumpers: the side (driver/passenger), and your paint colour code if you want a colour match
- For interior or electronic parts: any part numbers printed on the old component
Browse our yard inventory online
Want to see what we've got before you reach out? Browse our yard inventory by make, model, and generation. We list the newest model years first so the most current fits are easy to spot, and you can drill down to the vehicles we currently have in stock. It's a great way to confirm we carry your platform and to get a feel for what's available.
Keep in mind that a busy recycling yard moves quickly — vehicles come in and get dismantled as parts sell. If you don't see your exact vehicle listed, don't assume we can't help. Our stock changes constantly, and we can often source through our network. When in doubt, ask us directly.
Have this ready before you request a quote
The more precise you are about the part, the faster and more accurate your quote. Before you contact us, jot down:
- Exactly what you need — be specific ("driver's side front door" beats "a door")
- Your VIN, or year / make / model / engine / drivetrain
- The old part number, if there's one printed on the component
- A photo or two of the part — hugely helpful for hard-to-identify pieces
- Your city or postal code, so we can factor in pickup or shipping
Request a quote — here's how it works
Our parts are quote-based, so you won't see fixed prices on the site. There's a good reason for that: used-part value depends on condition, mileage, and what's actually on the shelf, and a fair quote reflects the specific piece we'd send you. Good used parts often cost a fraction of new — request a quote and we'll give you a real number for your vehicle.
Reach us however's easiest: call or text (780) 473-2424, send an email, or use the request-a-quote form on the site. Tell us the part and your vehicle details, and our staff will check stock, inspect the piece, and get back to you. We ship across Canada and into the USA, so you don't have to be in Edmonton to buy from us — though local customers are always welcome to arrange pickup.
More than a u-pull — tested, pulled, and warrantied
Eskimo isn't a u-pull yard. You won't be crawling through snow with a wrench. Our staff pull the part, inspect and test it where applicable, and clean it up before it goes to you. Used parts come with a 90-day standard warranty, so you're covered if something isn't right. And if you're after a remanufactured engine or cylinder head, those carry the manufacturer's warranty and a refundable core charge — you get money back when you return your old core. That's the peace of mind that keeps Alberta drivers coming back, winter after winter.

FAQ
Where do I find my VIN?
Look for a 17-character code at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside the vehicle), on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, or on your registration and insurance documents. A clear photo of it is all we need to start your search.
Why aren't there prices on your website?
Our parts are quote-based because used-part value depends on condition, mileage, and current stock. A quote gives you a real, fair price for the specific part we'd send you. Good used parts often cost a fraction of new — call or text (780) 473-2424 and we'll get you a number.
Do I need my VIN to get a quote?
No. The VIN is the fastest and most accurate way, but year, make, model, engine size, and drivetrain will get us started. The more detail you provide, the more precise your quote.
Can you ship my part to me?
Yes. We ship across Canada and into the USA, so you don't have to be in Edmonton to buy from us. Local customers are also welcome to arrange pickup. Just give us your city or postal code when you request a quote.
What if the part doesn't fit or fails?
Used parts come with a 90-day standard warranty. Remanufactured engines and cylinder heads carry the manufacturer's warranty plus a refundable core charge that you get back when you return your old core. Our staff pull and test parts before they ship, so you're covered.
